The Jolly Roger is the traditional English name for flags flown to identify a pirate ship ready to attack. The flag with a skull and crossbones on a black background became the most commonly used pirate symbol in the 1720s, although other designs were also in use.

The symbol is still used in the military today. It is used by four different U.S. Navy aviation squadrons and one of the U.S. Navy's DEVGRU assault squadrons.  The skull on a background of crossbones is also the centerpiece of the logo of the 1st Recon Battalion of the U.S. Marines.
