The Gadsden flag is considered one of the first flags of the United States. In later times, it was replaced by the current flag known as Stars and Stripes. The historic American flag depicts a common rattlesnake curled up on a yellow background, ready to attack. Below the snake is the inscription DON'T TREAD ON ME. 

The flag was designed by American general and politician Christopher Gadsden. It was used by the Continental Marines during the American War of Independence.
