Description

The 1st Infantry Division Challenge Coin is an official product licensed by the United States Army, part of the Patriotic Collector's Series.

The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving division in the Regular Army. It consists of: 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division Artillery.

It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" (abbreviated "BRO") after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First." The division has also received troop monikers of "The Big Dead One" and "The Bloody First" as puns on the respective officially sanctioned nicknames.

The Big Red One has been at Fort Riley, Kansas, since 2006. On July 7, 2006, after a 10 year absence from the United States, the 1st Infantry Division cased its colors in Wurzburg, Germany. On August 1, 2006, the Fighting First assumed command and control of Fort Riley. This event was one of many transformations that the Division has undergone to meet the new challenges facing the US Army.
