The 3rd Marine Division is an infantry division of the USMC. The primary mission of the US 3rd Marine Division is to perform landing operations. The division is supported by naval aviation and is prepared for use as an integral part of the Marine Expeditionary Force in landing operations.
The 3rd Division participated in combat in the Pacific, including the Battle of Iwo Jima, where it faced well-organized and determined enemy resistance. The terrain, ideal for defense, was heavily fortified by caves and covered artillery positions. Progress was slow and casualties were heavy. The battle for Iwo Jima cost the 3rd Division 1131 killed and another 4438 wounded.
In modern times, the 3rd Division participated in Operations Iraqi Freedom, Operation Tomodachi, and Enduring Freedom.
