The 2nd US Marine Division rose to prominence during World War II, distinguishing itself in the battles for Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. Parts of it were also stationed in Iceland.
In modern times, the 2nd Division has participated in operations in Kosovo, Kuwait, Haiti, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The scarlet and gold insignia centers on a hand holding a torch, with the stars of the Southern Cross constellation, as a reference to the fighting for the island of Guadalcanal during the Pacific War.
