U.S. Army Air Assault insignia is an original badge manufactured in the U.S.A. in accordance with applicable U.S. Government specifications.
The Air Assault Badge is awarded to members of the United States Army who have completed an air assault training course. The course includes three phases of instruction using U.S. Army rotary-wing aircraft: combat air assault operations; rigging and slingloading operations; and rappelling from a helicopter.
Created in 1974, the Air Assault badge was originally known as the Airmobile Badge. Initially, the badge was only authorized to be worn by members of the 101st Airborne Division. In 1978, the Air Assault Badge took its current name and the criteria for the badge was changed so that it could be issued throughout the Army to those who successfully completed Air Assault training.
The oxidized silver badge consists of a helicopter, in frontal view, superimposed on a pair of stylized, outspread wings curving inward. The wings suggest flight and together with the helicopter symbolize individual skill and qualification in helicopter assault landings.
