Mess with the Best Die like the Rest - This saying has its roots associated with the U.S. Army Special Forces, commonly known as the Green Berets in the late 1960s. The special forces community adopted it in the 1970s, and by the 1980s it was in fairly common usage.
The United States Army Rangers, or Rangers for short, are an elite light infantry unit of the United States Army dedicated to special operations around the globe. Currently, its combat core consists of three battalions comprising the 75th Ranger Regiment.
The first ranger units were formed at the beginning of the 17th century in North America. They were small light-armed formations of British colonists (mainly pioneers and hunters) intended for irregular fights with Indians and French from New France. In 1776, during the American Revolution, the first official branch of the American army was formed and named "rangers" after its commander, called Knolwton's Rangers.
